In the context of these days whose theme is “the bridge between cultures”, the art centre is pleased to welcome Metz artist Jean-Christophe Roelens and Ensemble K, for a conference-performance entitled Synopsie Op 2, the occasion of a reinterpretation of Olivier Messiaen’s work Quartet for the End of Time.
Synopsie Op 2
A conference, performance and meeting revolving around the Quartet for the End of Time
Visual artist Jean-Christophe Roelens and the musicians of Ensemble K.
Messiaen’s musical language is a bridge between disciplines, inspired by the connections he establishes between music, colour and ornithology. On January 15th 1941, Messiaen debuted the Quartet for the End of Time in front of the prisoners of Stalag VIII in Görlitz, Silesia. Inspired by vivid hallucinations provoked by conditions of extreme deprivation, he composed a work whose very subject is colour. His musical language was henceforth haunted by the colour-sound connection… as well as birdsong, which he introduced for the first time in his quartet. Under similar circumstances, Zikmund Schul composed most of his work in the Theresienstadt concentration camp.
Ensemble K: Luc Benoit, piano; Elodie Haas, violin; Thérèse Bussière-Meyer, cello; Xavière Fertin, clarinet
Musicological analysis: Benjamin Lassauzet
The event will take place at the Synagogue de Delme, and will be followed by a friendly buffet at the Gue(ho)st House.
Approximate duration: 1 hour.
An event organised in partnership with European Days of Jewish Culture (Lorraine), the Vic-sur-Seille Tourism Office, the Conseil Départemental de Moselle and the Drac Lorraine.
